Does Single-Sex Education Solve Anything?

October 19th, 2009

This fall, four schools will participate in an experiment that combines girls-only classes with online teaching. Supposedly, the classes will be tailored specifically to females because, according to Larry Goodman, director of strategic programming at the Laurel School (one of the four participating schools), “There is no one out there who’s thinking with a specifically feminine audience in mind.” So what would a female-geared online course entail? Goodman claims that “[g]irls thrive best in environments where connectivity is valued.” Therefore, the courses will focus on collaborative projects. The creators of the project hope that in future years, girls from all over the world, including those who attend co-ed schools, will be able to participate in the girls-only online teaching experience.

Both online courses and gender-segregated classrooms have grown in popularity in recent years. Online courses are (obviously) a more recent phenomenon, but private schools have offered single-sex education for ages. These days, public schools are starting to pick up the trend; the number of public schools offering single-sex classes has grown from 11 to over 500 in the last seven years.

The first question I have is why is this project only focusing on girls? Are girls really farther behind, or more distracted by the opposite sex, than boys? The evidence says no. As Judy Berman of Salon.com’s Broadsheet pointed out, boys are struggling in classrooms too. According to experts, their issues have been neglected, whereas there have been attempts to address girls’ issues for decades. So if these online courses are going to devote so much time and energy catering to girls’ “special” educational needs, why not have a boys-only component as well?

Or, as Amanda Hess of The Sexist blog suggests, why not forget single-sex education completely, and instead focus on strengthening co-ed teaching? She finds “this particular solution (single-sex teaching) to gender inequality in education to be utter bulls**t.” Hess doesn’t see online girl-only education as a solution to problems in co-ed classrooms; if girls and boys can’t be taught to work or learn together in the classroom, how are they expected to succeed in the co-ed, real world?

“Girls and boys will be collaborating and competing with each other well past prep school. Learning to collaborate and compete as equals is important, and not just in the interest of everyone getting along. If the sexes have different educational needs, as these segregated programs suggest, why see it as a liability? Why not, instead, see difference as a huge asset to both boys and girls, who can learn valuable tactics from each other?”

After reading up on the evidence, it still remains unclear whether single-sex education is beneficial. The “boys are better at math” myth was debunked, so maybe it’s time to also stop assuming that separate “feminine” and “masculine” ways of learning are the reason kids aren’t succeeding in school. My “learning style” didn’t stop me from acing calculus in a room full of dudes, and if I was utterly confused about something, it probably had less to do with my female mind and more to do with my professor’s lackluster teaching skills. Then again, I can’t say I wouldn’t have been less distracted (from cute boys) in a girls-only environment…

What’s your take on single-sex education?

Solar Christmas Lights ” Brighten Your Holiday without Energy Costs

October 15th, 2009

Solar Christmas lights are one of the most popular Christmas decorations nowadays, due to their cost efficiency and attractiveness. These types of lights will allow the homeowner to save up to 100 W per each string of Christmas lights. Solar Christmas lights add magic to any Christmas, since they do not have to be turned on or off. The lights will automatically turn on with the onset of the evening.

One of the main benefits of solar Christmas lights is that they eliminate the need in electrical outlets. Another benefit is that they help the homeowners to really save on the cost of energy. These lights get charged from the sunlight, and then they automatically come on with the onset of the evening. These lights allow you to decorate any tree in your garden, no matter how far away it is located from the house.

Small solar panels of solar Christmas lights can be conveniently placed on a tree branch or stuck into the ground. The panels usually include four solar cells, a light sensor and a regular rechargeable AA battery. The cells are capable of converting solar energy into regular electricity. A bright and sunny day, will allow the battery to completely recharge.

When looking for solar Christmas lights, it is better to opt for the lights equipped with special polycrystalline solar cells, which allow the lights to emit bright light for hours even after being charged for merely a few hours on a rainy, snowy or an overcast day.

How to calculate how long the lights will shine after the sun goes down? It is actually quite easy. Solar Christmas lights will usually stay on for about one hour at night, after being charged for about one hour in the daytime. Therefore, if the area where you live gets about eight hours of sun per day, you will also get about eight hours of shining lights in the evening.

Most common shapes of solar Christmas lights include: round, oval and teardrop shapes. Most common colors include: blue, red, green, and yellow. You can choose the type of light to your preference; some lights have soft and dim light, while others have bright and clear light.

Once Christmas is over, it doesn’t mean that you have to take your solar Christmas lights down. You can keep them in your garden, in order to; for example, decorate arches in your garden with this pleasant type of light. The lights can also be used for various other holidays, such as anniversaries and birthdays, as well as for lighting of pathways, porches, etc.

It is better to opt for solar Christmas lights with a replaceable and rechargeable AA size battery. Such battery will allow you to recharge and to replace the battery yourself in order to continue to get illumination on overcast days. It is better not to opt for lights with lithium batteries, since you will not be able to replace such batteries yourself. Regular AA size batteries can be recharged with a battery charger if they were not fully charged by the sunlight.

The most important thing about solar Christmas lights is that you can place them anywhere around your house and in the garden, and still you would never need to worry about the cords running across your yard. You would also never have to turn your lights off and on. Another pleasant thing is that you would save a lot on each electric bill.

It might be a good idea to watch your yard for at least two or three days before placing your solar lights. The most important thing to note is that the area, where you want to place your solar Christmas lights, does not get a shadow cast. Another important thing to remember is that solar Christmas lights operate best when their solar panel is in direct sun throughout the day.

Seychelles : islands of paradise pleasure

October 7th, 2009

Telling about Seychelles, involuntarily you get off on language of the tourist prospectuses advertising this or that heavenly spot: it is dazzling the white beaches washed by tender waves in which motley small fishes lap; the violent thickets overflowed with paradise birds; the hospitable natives incessantly dancing something incendiary …

All it, certainly, is presented and on Seychelles – granite-coral archipelago in Indian ocean at southeast coast of Africa. Also it is presented, maybe, even more magnificently, than on the next Maldives or, say, on the far Bahamas and the Bermudas. Seychelles – absolutely especial place, unique not only the flora and fauna, but also an unimaginable civilized-cultural cocktail and surprising harmony between the nature and the person.

Seychelles cocktail
I can not be kept from a number of comparisons with located in the same region Maldive Islands. So, on Seychelles tourists appear at once in a thick of the good-natured and affable Seychelles people. On Maldives the local population is not less affable and good-natured, only here tourists rather seldom adjoin to it. The matter is that the Maldivian authorities develop mass foreign tourism within the limits of officially proclaimed policy of "prevention of the cultural conflict". What can be "the cultural conflict"? And such: Maldives – the country Muslim, norms of Islam, as it is known, are no means always combined with free customs of foreign tourists. Therefore, to avoid misunderstanding, the Maldivian government has allocated for tourists about 100 desert islands and has constructed there everything that is necessary for smart rest. As a result tourists can relax as want, without disturbing and without shocking local population which in these original tourist "reservations" is few (except for the limited contingent of the housekeeping staff).

On Seychelles "the cultural conflict" cannot be by definition. After all the Seychelles people are a fruit of surprising synthesis of various races and blood – Arabs, Portugueses, the French and British colonists, Africans-bows,  Indians, Malayans, Chineses. On Seychelles any ethnic combinations in which result there were Creole people of archipelago were possible. Here there are Creoles of the French origin, Creoles of the British roots, Creoles of the Chinese and Indian blood, and also mulatto and malabar Creoles – all of them are united by Creole language (on the basis of French), strong feeling of a national generality and Catholic religion. Over 90 % of the population profess Christianity, in overwhelming majority Catholicism, presence of Anglican church is appreciable, other Protestant currents are presented also. Moslems, hinduists and Buddhists too are, but in obvious minority. Besides Creole state languages are still English and French. Clearly that such ethnocultural ????? has initially predetermined the raised tolerance to the most scandalous displays from outside visitors.

"The Seychelles mash" has generated amazing culture, syncretic, but at the same time is unique original lines of many civilizations very unlike against each other combining in. For an illustration it is possible to result Alec Voga’s magnificent statement about Seychelles women: "In Seychelles women enough French to have a good figure, English to differ good manners, Asian to be exotic, and African to conceal in itself charm of savageries".

And what miracle – Seychelles music! It combines, apparently, incongruous – music of slaveholders and music of slaves. The French minuets and kontrdances co-exist with mad African rhythms of dance "a ditch sega"  which dance under palm trees by the light of a fire. In violent drumbeat the jingling of an iron triangle, string search of a guitar and rhythmical sounds from stirring of the drawn coconuts with rattling grains inside is intertwined.

The Seychelles kitchen which has incorporated components of the most various culinary cultures (French, English, Indian, Chinese), but "welded" them in own way is not less wonderful. A basis of Seychelles viands – rice and seafood which prepare with spices, vegetables and fruit. (Here one bananas over 15 kinds, and still a mango, kiwi, nuts, avocado, citron.) the most popular dish – fish with rice (pwason ek diri), but tourists, certainly, foods involve much more exotic: soup from an octopus, a breadfruit tree fruit, shatiny from a shark or a stewed banana. Submit even a ragout from a bat, but it for fans of a gastronomic extreme. Among local drinks are well-known dite zitronel – tincture of lemon mint, "kalu" – the fermented coconut juice reminding young wine, "bakka" – fermented juice of a sugar cane, local beer "Sejrbju". Excellent wines from the republic of South Africa – the main trading partner of the island state are popular also.

6 Steps to Clear Acne Free Skin

October 2nd, 2009

Hundreds of medications, treatments, cleansers and cosmetics are available for people with acne, but the most important elements of an acne-fighting program won?t cost you a cent.

1. Nourish your skin by eating a healthy and balanced diet.

Most health care specialists agree that a healthy diet will benefit your skin. Cut down on caffeine, sugar and refined carbohydrates, all of which can activate the hormones that tell your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Add more fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, juices and other healthy treats to your daily diet, and you?ll see in improvement in your skin.

2. Drink lots of water to maintain the skin’s elasticity.

Plenty of water is essential to the health of your skin. One of the main activities of the body?s self-healing system is to filter the blood, a job performed mostly by the kidneys, with help from the skin in the form of perspiration. This self-healing system removes the toxic wastes of metabolizing food and of other harmful substances that get into our bodies one way or another.

This purification system operates efficiently only if the volume of water flowing through it is sufficient to carry away the wastes. 6 to 8 glasses (64 fluid ounces) of water a day is the recommendation. To reach your quota, carry bottled water with you in your car, your purse, your briefcase?wherever you go.

Get the water habit, and your skin will thank you for it.

Going to Buy Coffee Beans? Read This First!

September 25th, 2009

Mirrored from Free recipes - food and drink recipes. from the Free recipes - food and drink recipes

People who are not familiar with whole coffee beans and coffee often ask what so special about coffee beans in the first place when jar of regular coffee can be easily purchased and is much more convenient. That would be absolutely true if you’re all about convenience. But good taste is a whole other matter.

The fact of the matter is that there are over twenty different types of coffee beans. However, they are primarily divided into two broad types. Regular coffee drinkers might already be familiar with the various types of coffee beans available and their various flavors.

60%-70% of the world’s consumption of coffee comes from the Coffea Arabica coffee bean. It is also the type of coffee bean that most people enjoy drinking the most. The Caffea Arabica coffee bean is also a very expensive bean due to the strict growing conditions that are required when growing this coffee variety.

Coffee Arabica plants need a certain altitude in which they can thrive which should be at least a few thousand feet above sea level. These plants should also be grown in a temperature between 65- 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Coffee Coffea Canephora makes up between thirty to forty percent of the world’s coffee consumption. This type of coffee is also commonly called Robusta. This type of coffee bean is thought to be of an inferior quality because of its bitter taste. Coffee Cofera or Robusta can be grown at around 85 degree Fahrenheit and in almost any place. However because of its bitter taste its not very popular among most people.

Coffea canephora are often used as fillers for coffea Arabica beans, which because Arabica is expensive, are often mixed with these lesser quality coffee beans. So most of the time when you buy coffee beans it’s coffea Arabica mixed with Robusta in order to bring it within the reach of common people.

Whether you prefer Arabica based coffees or go for the Robusta varieties, the freshest and best tasting cup of coffee will always be made from freshly ground coffee beans. You can certainly buy a large can of supermarket coffee that is already ground up, or you may actually buy coffee beans from the same supermarket and grind it right there using their coffee grinder. But within a week or so, your ground-up coffee beans are going start tasting stale.

The best alternative is to purchase only small batches of whole coffee beans and grind them at home as you need them. Coffee grinders are widely available and fairly inexpensive, so it’s worth the money to buy coffee beans and grind them yourself.

Saltwater Fishing Gear | ArticlesBase.com

Saltwater fishing is entirely different from that of fresh water fishing, except that both are fishing. This is because of the area that any ocean fishing covers, ocean is vast with huge number of fishes in large-sizes. When you consider freshwater, only freshwater fishing gear, which is suitable for angling in the freshwater, is used. If you use the same freshwater fishing gear, it is inappropriate.
