EasyJet predicts winter air travel will fall

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Easy Jet is predicting that airlines will see a fall in demand of between two and four per cent this winter.

The low-cost carrier said it expects its annual pre-tax profit to fall by ten per cent to £110 million as a consequence of the gloomy outlook.

Strong growth in total revenue per seat that had been witnessed over the summer will reportedly tail off due to the economic downturn.

The carrier’s stock has lost more than 40 per cent of its value so far this year and had already committed to reining in some services in order to cope with heightened operating costs.

Those difficulties have been marginally offset by the recent fall in oil prices - down from a July peak of $147 to just $95 per barrel - but analysts insist the situation remains volatile.

Numis Securities wrote a research note warning that easyJet’s prediction may be understating the problem.

Assessing the industry situation in general, it voiced concern about the winter trading outlook “as pressures on the consumer accumulate and the outlook for employment in the UK deteriorates”.

Earlier this week, BA chief executive Willie Walsh warned the airline industry is going through its worst-ever crisis.

Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Ever walked past someone’s garden and been so enraptured by the front yard that you hardly registered what the house looked like? In these days of the difficult-to-shift property market, that is the kind of garden you want.

Front yards that have appeal may draw a buyer into your home. If they like the way you have finished your yard - they may think that they will like the way you have finished your home.

At this time of the year a yard is more about evergreens and accessories than flowers, as there are very few blooms available. Also - and for this reason - it is at this time of year that the Japanese garden stands out. A Japanese garden can lend itself to almost any climate, from snowy to humid, from rainy to desert.

To get an idea of the look of a Japanese garden, first look in a few magazines or books at the library, or check out some illustrations on the Internet. Pick illustrations that look similar to the same size and shape as the layout of your garden. Depending on your preference you may wish to copy some layout plans or ideas.pa-zen-garden-zen-gardening

Japanese gardens are traditionally ruled by Zen philosophy. Each feature has a deeper representation which you can ponder on, once you are aware of them. As you walk through your Japanese Zen area each day, you may even absorb some of the peace embedded in the Zen philosophy. These ideas for your own Japanese front yard will be discussed in two parts.

Firstly, in “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1?, the focus is on ambience, focal points, rocks and lanterns; then a follow up in “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2? explores plants, water, bridges, vessels and aged items. These combined features help to form the Japanese Zen garden.

There are several factors of this look that can be touched on to create an unusual garden. In an abstract way, the qualities that the gardens are representing are peace and tranquility, and in Zen philosophy, this is created by simplicity.

The relaxing ambience that encourages meditation can be achieved by placing a bamboo or rattan chair plus a small table near a wall, or in front of a lattice fence. If your garden is in a hot part of the country, group the seats under a tree or parasol. Stillness is the key word here.

Two other abstract notions suggested in a Zen garden are represented physically by a focal point that is not placed centrally, and secondly, a ‘window’ to a hidden part in your garden.

This can be represented by a piece of tall, latticed fence work, or a tree with shrubs around, or a pagoda, or even simply a bench that is partly concealed. This ‘hide and reveal’ theme is suggestive of the quest for human enlightenment and it also offers privacy. You may wish to incorporate your seating here for that reason.

The introduction of something tall lends itself to the look of the Japanese garden. Western gardens tend to be larger and boast a flat expanse of lawn; Japanese homes usually have tiny gardens. They tend to be more vertical, and tall shrubs will often be placed to hide the house from the street.

For an inexpensive focal point, you can dig a bed and put a bamboo or a red Japanese maple (miniature or full size) plus other plants in it. The bamboo bushes and trees will live in most mild North American areas, though you may have to ‘cover it’ in severe frosts. A very large cactus or groupings of cacti will also make an interesting focal point.

Smaller beds can be dug in across the yard. The center of the yard is deliberately left empty, and a lack of symmetry is desired. This reflects the lack of perfection in the world!

For some authentic Japanese atmosphere, one tall and one shorter black lantern can be well placed along your winding (never straight!) pathway, or sometimes peeking out from amongst a selection of shrubs and plants.

A small pathway can lead to nowhere, and Zen gardens will always have at least one pathway of either white round gravel or gray flattened gravel wending its way through your shrubs; several glimpses of this pathway will satisfy the unity and harmony requirement of Zen gardens.

Whilst lanterns are more of a Buddhist tradition, they have come to represent the essence of the Japanese garden, so they are also included in Zen designs.

One very large Japanese lantern and one smaller one elsewhere can look effective. These usually come in two traditional styles, one more fat-bellied and squat than the other. They are most commonly found in black or pale gray.

Some of the most inexpensive modern lighting will lend itself to the Japanese mode. The ‘push-in’ mushroom type lamps are very easily assimilated into the Zen garden design.

Rocks and stone are a big feature of the Japanese garden, with different sized rocks grouped seemingly at random. Smaller rocks will look good grouped with your focal point, or added to a bush or plant grouping.

Try to find at least one big rock. If you have one big one, you can group smaller ones beside it and finish off with a fern or two. Stones represent life’s immovable mountains.

If that really resonates with you, beware; just one rock will suffice; you do not need a rock for each immovable mountain in your life! If you feel that you have numerous immovable mountains in your life, then move into “Your Own

Medical Tourism: Traveling For Health

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Author: Kilian

Medical tourism is all the rage in many countries nowadays. Many patients who require complex surgeries or medical procedures for their ailments are now traveling abroad to get treated. Patients from UK, USA, and many other developed countries are moving to Asian countries like India, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Philippines, and Thailand. In these countries, these people receive superior healthcare at a fraction of what it would cost in their homeland.

Reasons for people opting for medical tourism

There are many reasons for which people from developed countries choose to get their ailments treated abroad. Some of the important reasons include:

  1. The quality of healthcare services that they find in the other countries often rivals what they would receive at home. Most of the doctors and healthcare professionals are highly qualified. Besides, most hospitals and healthcare facilities are equipped with state of the art provisions for treatment.
  2. The cost of treatment in the countries noted for medical tourism is often a fraction of what is required for same services at developed countries. In fact, for a fraction of the price required in US for a heart bypass, patients from US can travel to India, get treated, and top it off with a small vacation at any popular tourist destination within the country.
  3. Employer-sponsored healthcare policies are now starting to include complete cost coverage of healthcare for employees who travel abroad to get treated. This has resulted in the employees getting good healthcare and the employer having to pay much less.
  4. Some contagious diseases, such as, tuberculosis, typhoid, and malaria are often misdiagnosed in developed countries because most doctors and healthcare officials believe such diseases cannot happen in their country. In tropical countries like India, Malaysia, Philippines, etc., doctors are more open to accepting the possibility that the patient might indeed have a contagious disease.
  5. Last, but not the least, many insurance companies in the developed countries are now providing full coverage of the healthcare costs incurred by the insured patient choosing to get treatment done abroad. The patients are happy because they are getting good healthcare plus the benefit of a vacation, while the insurance company has to pay a much smaller amount to the patient.

All these benefits have inspired many patients in developed countries to opt for treatments for their ailments in foreign country. In the coming years, health tourism is expected to gain even more popularity.

Different Types of Taxi Insurance

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Looking at the increasing number of road accidents, as well as vehicle theft, insurance for your vehicle is a must. Getting coverage for a vehicle means that at the time of damage or theft, the company from whom the policy is taken will cover the cost of damages, or will pay for the cost of the vehicle in case of theft. Many of the firms are offering insurance policies on a commercial basis as well, one example being the introduction of taxi insurance in which cover is provided for taxis, cabs and even vans. Private hire insurance policies, as well as public hire insurance policies, are two types of taxi insurance policies available. In comparison to the public hire insurance policy, private hire insurance policies are a lot more expensive as they involve a higher risk.

These types of taxi insurances are very popular these days, as having taxis for public as well as private hire includes a lot of risks, and not opting for any kind of insurance policy will make the running of taxis unaffordable. But one must also be very careful in choosing the company from whom the insurance is obtained, as it is a very specialised field, and very few companies are providing it at genuine prices. Getting a cheap taxi insurance policy may not be a very hard nut to crack because of the competition between the companies.

Obtaining these taxi insurance policies is very easy, as one may register directly over the net or can even consult any executive from the taxi insurance company. The best way to get cheap taxi insurance is to directly get in contact with the wholesale insurance agents as they are well trained and can calculate the minimum amount of premium required to obtain a taxi insurance policy. The prices, or the premium, of the policy is relatively cheap, if there is a good number of a taxis included in the policy. Apart from this, there are three types of taxi insurance policies offered by companies and they are: third party, fully comprehensive, and third party fire & theft.

Idea of quick GM bankruptcy filing meets with skepticism

Monday, July 6th, 2009

By Sharon Silke Carty, USA TODAY

DETROIT — General Motors (GM) may be inching toward bankruptcy court, but the theory that GM could get through the process quickly faces increasing skepticism.

On Friday, Fritz Henderson said he came into his new position as GM’s CEO three weeks ago believing a bankruptcy filing was more probable than not.

“I feel the same way today,” he says. Henderson said GM is working on two scenarios: one that involves bankruptcy and one that doesn’t. The plan that does not includes looking at each GM brand to see if it’s needed. USA TODAY reported Thursday that dropping Pontiac and GMC was being looked at, along with Hummer, Saab and Saturn, which are already on the block.

GM has resisted filing for bankruptcy court protection, saying the process would be messy and long and would scare away customers. But some in the government have argued that GM could enter a “prepackaged” bankruptcy that could take a few weeks and result in a healthier company.

Not so, says Doug Bernstein, an attorney who heads Plunkett Cooney’s banking, bankruptcy and creditors’ rights practice. He looked at recent prepackaged bankruptcies and saw that none took less than six months.

That’s because bankruptcy law allows every interested party to be heard by a judge, which can take weeks, months or years. Auto supplier Delphi filed in October 2005. It is still in bankruptcy court, and more than 16,000 documents have been filed.

“The process of bankruptcy cannot be rushed,” Bernstein said.

GM has received $13.4 billion in federal loans, and President Obama said it must offer a more aggressive restructuring plan by June 1 to get more aid. Henderson says GM will be prepared to file for bankruptcy if it can’t reach its goals in other ways.

Talks with bondholders are going slowly. Henderson said the company is having talks but nothing he would classify as “intense negotiations.” GM is looking to cut two-thirds of its debt by swapping bonds for GM shares. Bondholders have resisted, saying GM’s plans won’t make it profitable any time soon.

Talks with the United Auto Workers are also going more slowly than expected because the UAW also is negotiating with Chrysler. The unions and bondholders are watching to see what the other will give up and to get a better idea of what the revamped GM would look like.

Snoring in children can be easy to resolve

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Q. My son was recently having an orthodontic exam when his orthodontist said he might be suffering from sleep apnea. My son has always snored in his sleep, but I just thought it was due to sensitive sinuses. Should I take our orthodontist’s diagnosis seriously?

A. Snoring is a condition that can sometimes be detected during a dental exam, although parents who are seriously concerned about this possibility should consult a board certified pediatric ear, nose and throat specialist for further diagnosis.

However, I have seen many cases of children with compromised airways, which is not the same as a true airway obstruction that you may see in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is much more common in adults and should be treated by a sleep specialist. Snoring in children is often easily resolved if diagnosed properly and at an early age.

If your child is snoring then you should not overlook it as a sinus issue or possible adenoid or post nasal problem that will resolve itself over time. Unfortunately, this type of airway obstruction can lead to considerable craniofacial asymmetries and imbalances that can be more difficult to correct as the child grows older.

Common causes of palatal constriction are thumb and finger sucking, pacifier usage beyond what would be considered a normal age, and abnormal swallowing or tongue positioning habits. Again, all of these are very treatable with minimal or no discomfort to the child.

One of the ways an orthodontist can detect a snoring problem is the growth and development of the mid-face region. An open airway means that air passes through the nasal cavity at a normal rate and helps stimulate the growth of the upper jaw and mid-face. A compromised airway means that air can not pass through the nasal cavity at a normal rate and gets blocked or obstructed usually from a constricted palate. It is important to remember that the bone that forms the roof of the mouth is also the same bone that forms the floor of the nasal cavity.

If a child has a constricted upper palate, then they are going to have a compromised nasal passage. If diagnosed at an early age, the child may undergo a non-invasive treatment that involves expanding the palate and ultimately opening up the nasal airway.

Expansion of the palate can be done with removable retainers with an expansion screw built into them or with a glued in appliance that is activated anywhere from once a day to once a week. Typically, the removable appliances are less invasive, resulting in more comfort for the child. Orthopedic corrections and changes are much easier to accomplish in a younger child and produce a much more stable result.

Conversations between the orthodontist and the parents will often determine which type of appliance is to be used. Factors to consider include: age of the child, severity of the problem, oral hygiene, compliance and cooperation. All of these elements are taken into consideration and the orthodontist will make a decision as to which treatment option would be best for the child before making a recommendation. Usually children should be screened by the age of 6.

Of course there can be other contributing factors to snoring that can be addressed by your pediatrician. These can include but are not limited to enlarged adenoids or tonsils, chronic sinus problems and the possible side effects of some medications.

A team approach between your orthodontist, pediatrician, ear, nose and throat specialist, and even an allergist, will usually be able to solve the problem in a fairly short period.

Spice Up Your Life with Fenugreek

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

While Fenugreek seeds are reach-me-down extensively in the recipes of countries in the Middle and Far East it is not as well known as many other spices in the US. In the US you can typically find Fenugreek as a flavoring in unnatural maple syrups. Not only does Fenugreek give a remarkable flavor to food but it also has several very important disease preventing characteristics.

Historically the former Assyrians cultivated fenugreek centuries before the time of Christ, and dried fenugreek seeds were used medicinally in time-honoured Indian, Greek, and Arabian medicine. Ancient Egyptians used fenugreek to induce childbirth. The seeds are commonly old in Indian curries, Egyptian bread, and to prepare a coffee substitute in northern Africa.

Fenugreek, which has anti-diabetic potency be like to cinnamon, is one of the most valuable spices for the control of glucose metabolism and thus the prevention and treatment of Type II diabetes. Remarkably, it has been shown to tone down blood glucose levels of Type II diabetics by as much as 46 percent.

Recent studies have investigated the blood cholesterol-lowering and blood glucose-lowering properties of fenugreek seeds, both in run-of-the-mill subjects and in those with diabetes. Significant reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but not HDL cholesterol levels, have been observed in non-insulin-dependent diabetics consuming 25 grams of fenugreek per day. The effective effects were sustained over five to six months. With only five grams of fenugreek a day, fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels were significantly reduced in those persons with diabetes. Today fenugreek is recognized as a of use botanical aid in the treatment of persons with diabetes.

Fenugreek seeds are rich in a type of dietary fiber that alters blood glucose levels by delaying the absorption of sugar in the intestines. It has also been shown to cut down on the absorption of fat and cholesterol from the intestines thereby providing added protection against heart disease and obesity.

Fenugreek has also been proven to be supportive when dealing with diabetes-related cataracts. In diabetics the enzymes that control glucose uptake into the lens of the eye do not use normally. Fenugreek has been shown to partially reverse both the metabolic changes in the lens and to reduce the density of the cataract.

While other spices like chilies and cinnamon agree to the culinary and medicinal headlines, the research into fenugreek is showing us that this spice has health benefits on a par with, or even superior to, those of the punter known spices.
